Births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships are handled by Islington Council on behalf of the City of London. Certificates can be ordered from the General Register Office.

Birth and death certificates

Opening hours

Monday to Friday: 9am to 4:30pm.

On the first Thursday of every month, the Register Office will close at 1pm.


In order to assist us to deal with the registration of births as quickly as possible, we have an appointment procedure. Please call on 020 7527 6350 to book a birth appointment. Births need to be registered within 42 days of the event.

There is a walk in service for deaths only. You should be seen within 30 minutes of turning up. Please note that between 12 noon - 2pm there may be a longer waiting period.

Marriages and civil partnerships

Marriages and civil partnerships are also provided by Islington Council and you can find out more about marriages and civil partnerships here.

Apply for a marriage and civil partnerships venues licence if you are the owner or proprietor of a premises and would like to register it as a venue for weddings and civil partnerships.
