We formulate our local strategy and write our plans in the context of a ‘golden thread' that links the vision and values of the City of London Corporation to the day to day management of the City Commons. We evaluate our open spaces in a local and national context to identify their important features.
We recognise the influence of the past on our Commons but apply modern good practice to their management. This approach is reflected through five themes, which link the City Together Strategy and the City's Corporate Plan with the strategic aims and improvement objectives of our Open Spaces Department.

The City Corporation believes that local people should be involved in the protection and management of our sites. To this end, we have Consultative Committees that meet twice a year to discuss issues and work planned for our Commons.
We involve representatives from the local community, interested organisations, local authorities, users of the Commons, local councillors and elected Members from the City of London’s Court of Common Council.
The purpose of the Consultative Committees is to gather and share information we need to make management decisions that will benefit visitors, wildlife and the wider environment.
The seven City Commons cover 479 hectares and cost around £1.3m each year to protect and maintain. They all have charitable status and are managed in partnership with the City Corporation and local communities. We seek income from a variety of sources to fund different aspects of our work.
The City Corporation provides its own money to employ staff and to maintain premises, vehicles, machinery, equipment and materials. City’s Cash is a private fund built up over the centuries from money originally donated by individuals, legacies and the like, invested in assets such as property. We use this income for the protection of our Commons and to provide for the recreation and enjoyment of visitors.
Single Payment Scheme
In 2005, changes to the Common Agricultural Policy meant that a Single Payment Scheme replaced most previous farm payments in the European Union. As farmers the City Corporation is required by the Rural Payments Agency to keep its land in good agricultural and environmental condition. We claim entitlements under the Scheme to pay for maintaining permanent pasture across our four Coulsdon Commons and our grazing rights over Ashtead Common.
Entry Level Stewardship
We have signed a five-year agreement with Natural England to deliver simple and effective environmental management that complements our usual operations. We receive basic payments to ensure that our pastures, hedges and woodland edges are maintained to an appropriate standard.
Higher Level Stewardship
This scheme aims to deliver significant environmental benefits to priority areas. The City Commons include Sites of Special Scientific Interest and historic landscapes, with scheduled monuments and other important features.
We have signed a ten-year agreement with Natural England to carry out complex environmental management of our woodland, scrub, grassland, heath and hedgerows. This income funds our conservation work, maintaining and restoring the important features for the benefit of wildlife and people.
The amenity interest of the City Commons is managed to a high standard for the recreation and enjoyment of the public. In recognition of this, each site proudly flies a Green Flag - an independently judged award given annually to the best parks and green spaces in England and Wales.
