English law

We have a large collection of English historic law material including a good general collection of other constitutional law materials.

The resources listed below are only a guideline and enquirers are encouraged to contact or visit the library to find out more about our stock.

Please note that we are not a law library and do not stock up-to-date legal textbooks.

Law reports

There are several different locations for Law Reports at Guildhall Library. Many collections of historic reports are held as part of the Remembrancer's Law Library (RLL) and others are held not as publications in their own right but as part of the multi-volume Revised Reports.

Our law report holdings are too extensive to list and enquirers are advised to telephone the Library in the first instance.

A useful place to find case reports is in The Times and we have:

  • The Times on microfilm from 1785
  • The Times Digital Archive 1785-1985;

A printed index to The Times is available.

Constitutional Law and State Papers

We have a collection of Calendars of State Papers published by The National Archives and guides to these holdings can be obtained from the Enquiry Desk.

Other important constitutional law holdings include:

  • UK Statutes
  • Halsbury's Statutes of England
  • Halsbury's Laws of England
  • Halsbury's Statutory Instruments and the Digest (formerly English and Empire Digest).

The Library also holds extensive but incomplete runs of historic Public and Local Acts and Statutory Instruments. Public Acts are virtually complete from earliest times, and a full list of Statutes held is available at the Library.  Indexes are available at the Enquiry Desk.

Statutory Instruments are bound by SI number from 1961 onwards and prior to this date they are bound by subject. In order to obtain them you must check the Table of Government Orders which is available from the Enquiry Desk.

The Library does not hold a comprehensive collection of byelaws but individual byelaws and collections of byelaws (almost all London-related) are listed on the catalogue.
