City of London Festival
For three weeks each summer, the unique buildings and outdoor spaces of the City are animated with a programme ranging across many kinds of music, visual arts, film, walks and talks: more than 50 ticketed performances and over 100 free events outdoors. The City of London Festival was founded in 1962 as an independent trust supported equally by the business community, the City of London Corporation, and the general public, with the aim of revitalising the cultural life of the City.
Since then it has become established as one of the UK's leading arts events. During the winter months (January to March) the City of London Festival also holds an annual free concert series, with performances in churches and other City venues, featuring a range of music, from classical to jazz.
Visit the City of London Festival website.
Every year this historic event brings around 250,000 people into the City to line the streets and cheer on the new Lord Mayor.
Lord Mayor’s Show
Every year on the first Saturday in November the City turns out to welcome the new Lord Mayor – and it does so in style. From the pomp and pageantry of military bands to the vibrant community groups; and from the tradition and finery of the pikemen and livery companies to the more modern face of City business, all the different aspects of the Square Mile come together in celebration. The huge scale of the Show involves thousands of people and hundreds of vehicles and floats.
In front of an audience of around 300,000, it travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice and back to Mansion House via Victoria Embankment. So put a date in your diary now to come along and be a part of the liveliest and most colourful day of the City’s year.
Visit the Lord Mayor’s Show website and watch a Museum of London film about the Lord Mayor's coach.
Spitalfields Music Summer Festival
Each June, this vibrant summer festival brings a series of music to the venues and streets of the City and East London. Spitalfields Music also run a popular winter concert series. Supported by the City of London.
