    ​Sherry Madera

The City of London Corporation appointed Sherry Madera, former Minister-Counsellor and Director at the British Embassy in Beijing, as the City of London’s Special Representative for Asia in January 2017.

Her role aims to enhance the City’s comprehensive and sustainable engagement with its Asian partners. She will focus her work on China but will also have reach in India and Singapore, as well as across the region.

Her remit includes:

  • Leading the City of London’s policy and trade & investment strategy for Asia
  • Working closely with HM Government and regulators and stakeholders in Financial and Professional services to create sustainable links with Asia including Greater China, India and Singapore
  • Engaging with policy leads in foreign jurisdictions to promote and enhance London’s position as a global financial capital.


Sherry previously held the position of:

  • Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Director General, Department for International Trade, China (2014-2017)
  • CEO, Ionic Advisors Strategy & International Corporate Finance (2009-2014)
  • Founder & CEO, AwayPhone Limited (2005-2009)
  • Investment Director & Portfolio Manager, London Asia Capital (2004-2005)

Special Adviser for Asia

Sherry is the City of London’s Special Adviser for Asia. Her role is to represent the UK based financial and professional services sectors at the highest levels in Greater China, India, Singapore and across the region as a whole. Sherry works closely with HM Government and regulators and stakeholders in Financial and Professional services. Her work covers a range of issues including the City’s involvement in the China-led Belt and Road Initiative, Green Finance, Emerging Currency Internationalisation, Insurance/Reinsurance and FinTech.

Embassy career

Previously, as Minister-Counsellor and Director at the British Embassy in Beijing, Sherry was responsible for promoting trade and investment between the UK and China through her team based in cities throughout mainland China, Hong Kong and London. Her particular focus is on Financial and Business Services and the Technology sectors, as key industries of cross border growth. She played a leading role in the regular UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogues, and Prime Ministerial Summits, and the once in a decade President Xi’s visit to the UK, and helps develop policy objectives as well as inward and outward investment opportunities between UK and China.

Finance and investment

A regular speaker at industry events, and commentator in the press and TV, her opinions are often sought on topics as diverse as RMB Internationalisation, the progress of China’s Free Trade Zones (FTZs), economic trends, innovation and technology trends, China growth and foreign direct investment.

Prior to working for the UK Government, Sherry was an investment banker specializing in public listings, venture capital and Mergers & Acquisitions with companies such as CIBC, Telia, China Mobile, Wireless Facilities, Global Crossing and IDG Ventures. She also was an entrepreneur who founded, built and exited several financial, technology, telecommunications, internet and travel industry startups including AwayPhone, Ionic Advisors and

Sherry has held several Executive and Non-Executive positions on Boards of companies in the UK, Ireland, USA, and Canada. She holds a BScH in Chemistry from Queen’s University in Canada and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst).


Born in Canada, Sherry attended Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario where she obtained a BScH in Chemistry in 1996. In 2001 she became a Chartered Financial Analyst at the Association of Investment Management and Research at the CFA Institute. She later attended the School of Oriental & African Studies at the University of London where she graduated with an MSc in International Management in 2006.

Personal life

Sherry lives with her husband and daughter in London. Her interests include international travel, skiing, hiking, tennis and cooking. She also speaks French fluently, as well as conversational Mandarin.
