The City of London has offices in India and China, and actively engages with all countries and regions across Asia to promote the UK Financial and Professional Services (FPS) industry and attract inward investment. Specific areas of engagement include:

Japan

The City of London is proud of its longstanding relationship with Japan and is home to many Japanese financial institutions.

Trade in FPS between the UK and Japan is booming. In 2016 UK exports in this area topped £4.6 billion- an increase of nearly £1.3 billion on 2015. In the same period UK imports in FPS from Japan hit £959 million, an increase of £135 million (source: ONS Pink Book 2017).

The City of London Lord Mayor 2015/2016, Alderman the Lord Mountevans, travelled to Japan in 2016, leading a business delegation to Tokyo to promote the City of London and the UK as the regional partner of choice when it comes to financial and professional services. The City of London Lord Mayor 2017/2018, Alderman Charles Bowman, travelled to Japan in July 2018, leading a delegation of assets managers to boost UK-japan cooperation in financial services.

To boost ties between the UK and Japan in the field of FPS, the City of London sits on TheCityUK Japanese Market Advisory Council, run by TheCityUK.

ASEAN

The City of London actively engages the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and with the Financial Services sector in Singapore, as a fellow international financial hub.

We are working with UK and local stakeholders to explore potential areas for collaboration with Singapore, including insurance, cyber security and asset management. This work sits alongside the annual UK-Singapore Financial Dialogue led by HM Treasury, which the City of London participates in.

Elsewhere in South East Asia, we are pursuing areas for collaboration now and in the future, in areas of foreign exchange and Islamic Finance.

To build collaboration in FPS between the UK and ASEAN, the City of London sits on the ASEAN Market Advisory Council, run by TheCityUK.

South Korea

South Korea is a vital trade and investment partner for the UK, and we are committed to deepening the long-standing links between London and Seoul in the FPS industries.

The City of London 2016-2017 Lord Mayor Dr Andrew Parmley led a business delegation to the South Korean capital in February 2017 to promote the UK as one of the best places in which to invest and do business with. The City of London 2017-2018 Lord Mayor, Alderman Charles Bowman, travelled to South Korea in July 2018, to promote the UK as a partner in fintech and green finance.
