Contact the Coroner's Court
The Senior Coroner for the City is an independent judicial officer appointed by the City of London Corporation to investigate reported deaths and cases of treasure found within the historic Square Mile of the City of London. There are two Assistant Coroners, who have the same powers as the Senior Coroner.
Registering a death
The City of London has an arrangement with the London Borough of Islington to use its services.
The provisions of the Coronavirus Act 2020 have been commenced by regulation. From Monday 30 March 2020 and for the duration of the pandemic period, deaths will be registered by telephone appointment. If you have been told you can register a death, you should book an appointment to register a death online.
There is no requirement for relatives to collect the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from the hospital, care home or GP. A scan of both sides of the signed certificate will be sent to the Register Office directly.
There will be no requirement for customers to attend the register office in person. The Islington Register Office will be closed to the public.
The ‘green certificate’ for burial or cremation will be sent electronically to the funeral director, crematorium or cemetery office.
If copies of the death certificate are purchased these will be posted to the applicant.
The City of London Coroner's Court serves the historic Square Mile of the City of London only. There are 32 London boroughs, in London, each served by a local coroner's service.
