The government announced measures to help protect millions of households from rising energy costs. This includes a £150 council tax energy rebate.

All households in England whose primary residence is valued in council tax bands A – D will receive a one-off council tax energy rebate payment of £150.

If your property is in band E and you are eligible for a disablement banding reduction, then you will also get the £150 payment.

The rebate will not be paid for second homes, empty properties, certain classes of exempt properties and a corporate body or other body such as a housing association, the government or government body.

Payments

If you pay your council tax by Direct Debit

This has been paid automatically to those residents who qualify for this grant and had a direct debit set up on their account by the 15 May 2022, from which we have been able to collect at least one payment from and where the bank account name matches the person who is liable for the Council Tax at the property.

If you don’t pay your council tax by Direct Debit

This scheme is now closed, and no further claims can be made. If you had not claimed this rebate and was eligible to receive it, then the £150.00 will be credited to your council tax account.

Energy rebate discretionary fund

This scheme is now closed, and no further claims can be made.

For those who needed help with their energy bills but were not eligible under the main scheme then there was discretionary funding available to help. Each local authority could determine who would qualify for assistance under the discretionary scheme.

The City Corporation provided discretionary assistance to the following households in two phases.

Phase one

  • Households in receipt of the Council Tax Reduction Scheme discount (council tax benefit) in bands E – H.
  • Households who are in bands F – H and in receipt of a council tax disabled band reduction. Households in band E who qualify for the disabled band reduction will be paid under the main scheme.
  • Households in bands E – H and in receipt of a carers or severely mentally impaired council tax disregard discount.
  • Households in bands E – H and in receipt of the severely mentally impaired council tax exemption.
  • Households in bands E – H who are receipt of Housing Benefit but not the Council Tax Reduction Scheme discount.

For the above households we paid £150 automatically if you pay by direct debit. If you had not claimed this rebate and was eligible to receive it, then £150.00 will be credited to your council tax account.

Phase two

This scheme opened on the 1 July 2022 and provided assistance to households in bands E – H where the liable person for council tax is in receipt of one of the following benefits on the 1 April 2022 or at the point of making the application and they do not already qualify for the Council Tax Reduction Scheme discount.
