Guildhall Conservation Area [No. 12]

An assortment of historic commercial buildings that provide the setting for the Guildhall within the historic street network.​

The Guildhall Conservation Area Character Summary (4MB) and Guildhall Conservation Area Management Strategy (30KB) were published in 2004.

The documents identify key characteristics of the area and particular planning considerations.

The boundary of this conservation area was adjusted as part of a general boundary review in 2007. It supersedes the boundary depicted in the above Character Summary. To view the current boundary, please visit the City's interactive map, selecting 'Conservation Areas' under the 'Conservation' tab.

History and character summary

  • The Guildhall and its associated buildings, the centre of governance for the City of London since Saxon times
  • A network of historic streets and spaces, including churchyards and the large Guildhall yard
  • The remains of the Roman amphitheatre underneath the Guildhall, expressed on the surface of the yard
  • High quality historic commercial buildings that provide the setting for the Guildhall complex.
