Bow Lane Conservation Area

Conservation areas are designated to safeguard areas of special architectural and historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. There are 27 conservation areas in the City of London within which there are special planning controls which need to be considered when undertaking development.

Visit the City of London Interactive Map to see if your building is within a conservation area. Select 'Conservation Areas' under the 'Conservation' tab to display the area boundaries.

Conservation areas: a general introduction to their character

The Conservation Areas in the City of London: A General Introduction to their Character (3MB) forms the introduction and background to the character of the City's conservation areas. It identifies the factors central to the qualities and identity of the environment of the City of London. The general introduction is complemented by a series of character summaries and management strategies which can be found on the individual conservation area web pages.

Conservation area consultations

If an SPD is being prepared for a conservation area you will find the documents and details of how to submit your comments on the individual conservation area page. Public consultations are promoted through the City's website and the Guildhall, Barbican and Shoe Lane public libraries.

Individual conservation areas

We are preparing a Character Summary and Management Strategy Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for each conservation area. This document provides an understanding of the significance of each conservation area by identifying and analysing its principal characteristics. It gives detailed guidance on the City's planning policies and is drawn up in consultation with the public and issued in draft for comment before it is finalised and adopted.
