The City of London has unique powers to affix street lights to buildings. Lighting columns are therefore rarely needed and street clutter is greatly reduced.

'White light' is used throughout the City and we are increasingly utilising new LED lighting technology to provide high quality lighting at significantly reduced energy and maintenance cost.

We maintain over 14,000 lighting points in the City, including:

  • Street lights
  • Traffic signs
  • Bollards and other illuminated street furniture

We also floodlight five river bridges:

and many of the City's famous public buildings, including:

We visually check all lighting points at night once a week and where possible undertake repairs immediately. Otherwise we endeavour to complete the repair within two days. However, if there is an electricity supply failure then we are dependent on the local supplier, UK Power Networks, for supply restoration.
