Millennium Bridge snow clearance

In the event of snowfall or freezing conditions the City of London Cleansing Service ensures the free and safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians within the City.

To find out which roads and pavements are gritted and cleared, see our interactive maps below

Note: During such times the sweeping of streets and removal of litter is suspended.

Some roads within the City are maintained and gritted by Transport for London (TfL), for more information, visit the TfL website

Stay up to date

We receive regular weather reports from MetDesk which we use to inform our operational response and decide which priority level will be actioned.

STAGE 1 - Priority 1 roads (precautionary)

When ice or snowfall is predicted we will action the precautionary treatment of key roads in the Square Mile. This includes bus routes and cycle lanes on main through routes, the roads around St Bartholomew's Hospital and those adjacent to police and fire stations. See these roads on the Stage 1 - Priority 1 roads (precautionary) route map.

STAGE 2 - Priority 1 pavements

During this stage we clear pavements adjacent to hospitals, police and fire stations, train stations, bus stops, schools, nurseries, the Guildhall and steps leading to high walks and over walks. See these areas on the Stage 2 - Priority 1 pavements route map.

Please note: that bus stops are not indicated on this map, but will be cleared.

STAGE 3 - Priority 2 roads

During this stage we treat roads on secondary routes. See these roads on the Stage 3 - Priority 2 roads route map.

STAGE 4 - Priority 2 pavements

During this stage a two metre pathway on one side of the street along main roads, including crossings, will be cleared of snow and salted. See these areas on the Stage 4 - Priority 2 pavements route map.

Please note: this map does not indicate which side of the street will be cleared.

STAGE 5 - All remaining roads and pavements

During this final stage a two metre pathway will be cleared and salted as above on the second side of main streets and one side of secondary streets.

The remaining streets will be cleared, followed by the full clearance of pavements of main streets. This is then followed by the full clearance of all pavements and litter removal and then the removal of all residual snow and ice.

Advice to residents and businesses

If you would like to clear snow and ice or salt any pavements yourself, you can find some advice on the GOV.UK website.
