Fixing or placing overhead apparatus

Consent to the fixing or placing of any overhead beam, rail, pipe, cable, wire or other similar apparatus over, along or across a highway (section 178(1) of the Highways Act 1980)

The City of London Corporation cannot consent to the fixing or placing of overhead beams, rails, pipes, cables, wires or other similar apparatus over highways for which Transport for London is the highway authority. Those persons wishing to fix or place any such apparatus over these highways should contact Transport for London about obtaining consent.

Applications for consent to the fixing or placing of any overhead beam, rail, pipe, cable, wire or other similar apparatus should include:

  • The full address of the site that the proposed overhead apparatus projects from and the name(s) of the highway(s) over which the overhead apparatus is to project.
  • The name and full contact details of the applicant for consent.
  • The name and full contact details of any agent(s) for the applicant for consent.
  • Full details of the proposed overhead apparatus including two sets of drawings to appropriate scales including (i) a site plan showing the proposed overhead apparatus and the highway(s) over which the proposed overhead apparatus is to project; and (ii) detailed plans, sections and elevations as appropriate showing the highway boundaries, the kerb line(s) (if any) and full details of the proposed overhead apparatus.
  • Reference details of the technical approval of the proposed overhead apparatus including the date of issue of the design and check certificate(s).
  • Reference details of the planning permission for the proposed overhead apparatus including the application reference number and the date of the permission.

Where technical approval is required the consent to fix or place the proposed overhead apparatus will not be granted unless and until the design and check certificate(s) have been issued.

Where planning permission is required the consent to fix or place the proposed overhead apparatus will not be granted unless and until planning permission has been granted.

There is no fee for consent to fix or place proposed overhead apparatus.
