The City Corporation consulted on changes in Bartholomew Close in August 2016 as part of the redevelopment of the area by Helical known as ‘Barts Square’. One of the changes was the removal of the motor cycle parking place at the rear of the church of St. Bartholomew the Great. At the time of the consultation, an alternative location for the motor cycle parking had yet to be identified. The City Corporation is proposing to extend the motor cycle parking place in Smithfield Street on the south-east side of the island around the former public conveniences by 4 metres. A new motor cycle parking place 10 metres in length is proposed on the south side of West Smithfield adjacent to No. 1 Giltspur Street.

The building at No. 24 to 30 West Smithfield is being refurbished and the works will require the construction of a hoarding around the building and a site storage compound on the carriageway. To facilitate this, the City Corporation is proposing to remove the disabled bays outside the building in West Smithfield and adjacent to the building in Hosier Lane. The payment parking place outside No. 1 Giltspur Street will be amended to convert two parking bays to disabled parking to avoid the loss of disabled parking in the vicinity of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital.
