COVID-19 Waste services
Impact of coronavirus on recycling, waste and street cleaning services
The City of London Corporation are working closely with our partner Veolia to minimise the impact of coronavirus on recycling and waste services, street cleaning and other key environmental services.
Business continuity plans have been successfully implemented and resources are being closely monitored to ensure the most essential services can continue to be delivered safely.
Currently services are operating with no significant disruption
Cleaning and disposing of waste
When cleaning you should use your usual household products, like detergents and bleach, as these are very effective at getting rid of the virus on surfaces. Clean frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, remote controls and table tops. This is particularly important if you have an older or vulnerable person in the house.
Please continue to use your recycling and rubbish collection services as normal, with the following important exception:
Households that are self isolating should follow the Government's 'Stay at home' advice :
- Store personal waste such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths securely within disposable rubbish bags.
- Place these bags into another bag, tied securely and keep separate from other waste.
- These bags should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external general waste bin.
- Please do not take this waste to the Tower Hamlets Reuse and Recycle Centre.
Please dispose of your other household waste as normal. It is more important than ever to ensure that recycling is clean and dry, and that rubbish bags are all securely tied to help prevent spills and protect our collection teams and the public.
It is also important that you wash your hands regularly, maintain good hygiene when handling your rubbish and recycling and keep your distance from Veolia staff when they are collecting bins and cleaning the streets.
Thank you for your continued support.
Reuse and recycling centre
The Tower Hamlets Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC) is open but there may be restrictions. Please see the Tower Hamlets RRC website for further information.
Bookable collections of bulky waste items are going ahead as normal.
Avoid doing big clear-outs while at home, which will create more rubbish and recycling for our crews to collect. If possible store furniture or reusable items inside your home and donate it to a charity shop or put it on Freegle or Freecycle once safe to do so.
Textile collections from textile banks are going ahead as normal
