About City Gardens

The City's gardens are managed and maintained by the City Gardens team, which has its own in house team of gardeners that maintain the horticultural standards and everyday upkeep of the City's green spaces.

In addition to the green spaces themselves, the City Gardens team also consults on plans and policies that effect the way in which we deliver our services. See our consultations page for more information.

Governance

The City Gardens are overseen by a Management Committee known as the Open Spaces and City Gardens Committee. The Committee was created to act as the overarching policy and strategic body in relation to the activities of the Open Spaces Department. It is responsible for the management of the gardens, churchyards and Open Spaces in the City under the control of the Common Council. It is also responsible for management of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.

If you would like to find out more about the City Gardens and the work we do, contact the City Gardens team.

Management Plans

The aim of the City Gardens Management Plan 2017-2022 is to describe the role and function of the City Gardens team in managing City of London Corporation open spaces in the Square Mile.

The aim of the Management Plan is to support the City of London Open Space Strategy vision:

“The creation of a network of high quality and inspiring open spaces which helps ensure an attractive, healthy and sustainable and socially cohesive place for all the City’s communities and visitors.”

A site specific plan is also available for Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.

Download the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground Management Plan 2015-2020 (1MB).

Byelaws

There are number of City Gardens managed sites which are protected by their own individual Byelaws. Byelaws are made by Local Authorities, like councils, to tackle local problems.

For more information about the Byelaws which affect the City Gardens please contact the City Gardens team.

Open Space Strategy

The Open Space Strategy sets out how we will protect and enhance the gardens in the City and create more spaces. It guides the management and planning of open spaces.

Find out more about the Open Space Strategy.

The Open Spaces Audit (3MB) informs the Open Space Strategy. The audit gives detailed information about the number, distribution and quality of the City’s open spaces.

Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Site Accreditation

Bunhill Fields Burial Ground has retained Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Site Accreditation since 2009. The scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces.
