City in Bloom air quality wheelbarrow

City in Bloom Air Quality Challenge

For 2017 City in Bloom is supporting the City of London Corporation's Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) to improve local air quality and create a more liveable and greener neighbourhood.

For the 'clean and green for seventeen' challenge Friends of City Gardens will be asking you to make a difference to your local area by designing and installing a planting scheme.

City in Bloom is an annual campaign organised by Friends of City Gardens and supported by City Gardens, City of London Corporation. It recognises the work of communities, businesses and residents in making the places we live, work and visit greener.

Applications for City in Bloom 2017 are now open!

Who can enter?

Anyone in the Square Mile can take part and entries could include a window box, planter, raised bed, green wall or front garden. Entries should be eye-catching, informative and include plants that help improve air quality. Entries will be encouraged at street-level within the LEN area which includes the Barbican, Guildhall and Barts area. The challenge is free to enter.

The aim of the challenge is to:

  • Contribute towards improving local air quality
  • Support the RHS Greening Grey Britain campaign
  • Raise awareness of air pollution

You can enter a single site or why not team up with a community group, school, business or local resident.

How do I enter?

Register your interest by Friday 31 March.

Friends of City Gardens can provide guidance and support on sites and suitable plants.

What happens next?

Every entry will be professionally photographed and you will receive a copy of a photo book that will record everyone's achievement.

As part of Open Garden Squares Weekend in June your entry may be part of a guided walk. Entrants are welcome to be involved as part of the weekend to explain their installation to others.

After the challenge you may wish to continue to maintain your entry, relocate it elsewhere, donate it or it could inspire you to do more!
