A registered charity, the Forest is managed under the Epping Forest Act of 1878. You can download a copy of the act below.

Epping Forest is patrolled 365 days a year by Forest Keepers whose role is to assist the public to enjoy the Forest safely and to protect the Forest from inappropriate damage or abuse. The Forest Keepers are also attested constables and enforce the Epping Forest byelaws. If necessary, this includes prosecuting byelaw infringement cases in the Magistrates Court.

Management Plan

Staff work to the Epping Forest Management Plan which sets out the main management tasks and informs an annual work programme. The Management Plan is divided into eight sections:

  • Resources
  • Access
  • Heritage
  • Trees
  • Open Grassland
  • Wetland
  • Monitoring  ​
