Horse-riding licences

Open horse riding has now ended until Spring 2020.

Horse-riding is subject to a licence fee which is re-invested directly in to the maintenance of horse rides and additional infrastructure required for horse-riding.

In order to ride your horse on Epping Forest land, you will need to apply for a horse riding licence and display your licence disc when riding.

Applying for a licence

To apply for a licence, please complete and return the appropriate form from the list below and return it to us as below.

Proof of age will be required for junior licence applications. Please bring this with you when submitting your application, or include a photocopy with your postal application.

Submitting your application

To submit your application, visit Chingford Golf Shop, Bury Road, Chingford, E4 7QH between 7.30am and 4.00pm on any day of the week. Your application will be processed and your licence disc issued immediately.

Alternatively, postal applications may also be made to the same address. Note: postal applications are subject to a fee of £2.95 in addition to the licence fee. This must be included with your application form and covers the cost of us sending your licence. Please allow 5 days for your licence to be issued and posted to you.

Displaying your licence disc

Your licence to ride in the forest is not valid until you have received a disc and have displayed it on the left hand side of the horse's bridle. Please note, failure to display a valid disc is a breach of the law and may lead to prosecution.

What happens if I lose my licence disc?

If you lose your disc, please contact the epping forest team as soon as possible to discuss replacement. Do not ride without your disc. The cost of a replacement disc is £7.

Can I cancel my licence?

You may cancel your licence at any time. If you choose to cancel your licence, we will multiply the weekly licence fee by the number of weeks your annual licence was held. If the resulting sum is less than the licence fee you paid, we will refund the difference.

What should I know before riding in the Forest?

Before riding in the Forest, we recommend reading our byelaws as breaking them can entail a fine or prosecution
