Rose garden West Ham Park

West Ham Park serves a multi-cultural local population, is open every day of the year and is carefully maintained by a dedicated team of park keepers and gardeners. Visitors feel welcome and safe in a park that is ranked as the most popular in East London.

Management plans

A detailed five-year Management Plan for the park is available which assesses priorities for the future and to demonstrate what visitors can expect in terms of service standards. A ten-year Conservation Plan was also developed for the park in 2009 and both of these documents are available from the park office.

Charity status

You may not realise that this green space is a Registered Charity and we rely on the generous donations of our visitors, corporate partners and those who have a connection with green spaces to help us to keep them accessible for public recreation, conservation and health. The park is overseen by a Management Committee consisting of 17 members known as the Open Spaces, City Gardens and West Ham Park Committee. The park was previously overseen by the Committee of Managers of West Ham Park which was formed in 1874. A governance review carried out in 2011 by the City of London amalgamated the West Ham Park Committee with the Open Spaces Committee.

Eight members of the Committee are City of London elected Members, together with four appointed by the heirs of the late John Gurney Esq., one is appointed by the Parish of West Ham and two are appointed by Newham Council.


The park is protected by byelaws. The West Ham Park byelaws (35KB) are displayed on the back of the notice boards at park entrances. During office opening times, 8.45am - 4.30pm, the byelaws can also be obtained from the office or by asking a keeper.

Achievements and awards

Green Flag Award and Special Award for Innovation

West Ham Park has retained Green Flag status for the past 15 years. The scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces.

Green Heritage

West Ham Park has successfully received Green Heritage Site accreditation meeting the required standard in the management and interpretation of the Park’s historic importance for the fifth time. 

Investors in People

West Ham Park meets the high Investors in People standards. Investors in People are the UK's leading people management standard designed to help organisations develop performance through their people.

Natural England Walk for Health Accredited Scheme

West Ham Park's weekly walks are part of the national Walking for Health scheme is accredited by Natural England for meeting delivery criteria and standards. The City of London run several walking schemes like this across their sites. ​​
