Collections group visits

We offer three specialist group visits which are suited to students, researchers, relevant history groups and professionals. 

All visits last 1½ hours and are suitable for groups of six to 12 people.

Marine history collections

An introduction to the Lloyd’s Marine Collection, a historic maritime collection, held at Guildhall Library by the keeper of the collection. The visit will provide an overview of the sources which can be used for the study of the Merchant Navy from 1741 – present, including ships’ details, shipping movements and casualties. This will include viewing a range of sources from the collection.

Garden history collections

Guildhall Library houses the Gardeners' Company Library and our London collection also includes works on gardens and gardening. An introduction to the Library’s history and collections in the form of a short illustrated talk by one of our Librarians, followed by a chance to view printed material from the collection relating to gardens and horticulture. 

Food and drink collections

Guildhall Library has the largest public collection of food, drink and cookery books in the UK.

How to book a collections group visit

Collections group visits are usually held on:

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays
  • Between 10am-12midday or 2pm-4pm

However, it may be possible to arrange a visit on other days/times, subject to availability.

To arrange a visit, please email guildhall.library@cityoflondon.gov.uk with the following information or call us to have an informal chat about your visit on 020 7332 1868:

  • Details and number of people in the group
  • The tour or subject focus if a pre-existing tour does not exist
  • When you would like to visit.

Visits are offered free of charge and donations are always appreciated.

Please be aware that as tours and visits are subject to availability we recommend booking well in advance.
