London Generations family history database

London Generations is a database of sources for family history research in London. You can download guides for each London borough. It includes a variety of indexes to our major family history sources and currently includes the following types of records:

Anglican parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials for around 800 parishes within the former counties of London and Middlesex
Bishops transcripts of parish registers
Anglican parish Poor Law registers
Non-conformist baptism and marriage registers
Land tax assessments
Admission and creed registers for workhouses run by Boards of Guardians
London County Council school admission and discharge registers
Electoral registers for the counties of London and Middlesex

It does not contain individual names of Londoners. Don’t forget that London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) holds many more archives than are listed in these indexes. To find out more about the records held at LMA, visit our collections pages, or contact the enquiry team if you can’t find what you're looking for.

Below, you can download PDFs containing all the information listed above. The information is separated out into listings for each individual London Borough. There are also entries under some of the home counties where border changes mean that we have some material from other areas.

If you don't know which London Borough you need to look at, you can use the guides to place names and parishes. For example, LMA is located in Clerkenwell, and if you use the 'Guide to places', to look this up, you will find that Clerkenwell is located in the London Borough of Islington. You could then use the Guide to Islington to find out details of all the history sources listed above for the Clerkenwell area.

The Guide to parishes will show you which borough to look at for individual parish names.
