The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) are pleased to announce an exciting new partnership to allow access to the RCS archives and rare library books at LMA while building work is carried out at the RCS site in Lincoln's Inn Fields. Public access to RCS archives and library books began in October 2017 and will continue until 2020. RCS collections can be viewed by appointment only.

RCS and LMA are looking forward to working together to store and provide access to these nationally designated collections. RCS material will be available only when it has been pre-booked through RCS staff, within LMA’s normal opening hours.

Visitors must email RCS staff at least 5 working days in advance of the day on which they wish to visit, to order/discuss their enquiry (LMA is open Monday to Thursday). Readers must obtain an LMAHistory card in order to consult any RCS material.

RCS material may only be photographed at LMA by readers on payment of LMA camera pass fee or by ordering through LMA’s Digital Services section. LMA staff’s role is not to interpret RCS holdings but they can offer general assistance. LMA staff will only allow one reader to consult documents produced for another reader if RCS staff have asked them to do so. Readers will be subject to LMA’s normal strict document handling guidelines and supervision by LMA staff who will intervene if they believe that a user may be mishandling RCS documents.
