The People's Tower

cardboard structures in the street in France
  • 15 - 21 July 2019
  • See below for timings and locations
  • FREE

Work alongside artist Olivier Grossetête to create a monumental cardboard structure inspired by the Guildhall.
Over 1,000 boxes will be used to build this 20m high masterpiece and Olivier needs the public’s help to
assemble the building blocks of this giant tower.

Following a week of drop-in box building workshops, members of the public will be invited to help build the tower
on the Saturday and then welcomed back to topple and destroy it on the Sunday. Come and take part in all, or
some, of the fun.

Want to know what to expect? Check out this video from a previous build.

Volunteering opportunities

Be part of an internationally acclaimed artistic project.

What are the roles?

  •  Workshop Assistants: help with the smooth running of the box building workshops. Workshop Assistants will help to facilitate the sessions by assisting participants with the building and answering any questions they have. In certain sessions, you may also be required to help integrate individuals into existing groups and ensure they are supported.
  • Event Stewards: support the event delivery team during the construction (on Saturday 20) and deconstruction (Sunday 21). The role will include giving audiences instructions, answering their questions, helping to maintain audience safety and assisting with the construction of the tower if required.

A full briefing will be provided for both roles, and no previous experience is needed, however we are looking for people who are comfortable engaging with members of the public, including children, in a friendly and involving way and a willingness to get stuck in and have a go.

Why volunteer?

  • It’s a great way to meet new people and get under the skin of this fantastic City
  • Both roles will be supporting a project with the aim of bringing the community together and enriching the lives of those who take part
  • Meet a wide range of people and to participate in an internationally acclaimed artistic project
