How Women Have Helped to Shape the City

The Fawcett Society present a discussion exploring the incredible women who have helped to shape the City of London over the course of its history. 

Chaired by Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of The Fawcett Society, this event will look to cover areas such as the underrepresentation of women in London’s history as well as the changing role of women as the City has evolved around them. Guests include Sharon Ament, Director of the Museum of London, Sanja Rahman, Business Development Manager at Sodexo and Jeannette Arnold OBE, Deputy Chair of the London Assembly.

Speaker Biographies

Sam Smethers joined Fawcett in 2015 as Chief Executive. Prior to that she was the Chief Executive of Grandparents Plus for over six years. No stranger to equalities and gender issues, Sam worked for both the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. She also served as a Fawcett trustee between 2007 and 2010.

Sharon Ament joined the Museum of London as Director in September 2012. She was previously Director of Public Engagement at the Natural History Museum and had a wide remit that encompassed all business and visitor facing elements. She was responsible for building income, visitor numbers and engagement internationally.

Joanne McCartney AM has been a member of the London Assembly since June 2004 and in May 2016 was appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor of London by Sadiq Khan. Joanne is also Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare and before becoming an Assembly Member, enjoyed a profession as a barrister and specialised in employment law.

Sanja Rahman is Business Development Manager at Sodexo. In 2016 Sanja was nominated in the rising stars of facilities management category of the We Are The City Awards, which aims to support the pipeline of women in management roles.
