Composite products

Date updated: 6/11/2020

A composite product is defined in EU legislation as a foodstuff intended for human consumption which contains both processed products of animal origin and products of plant origin. The rules governing imports are complicated and if you plan to import these products please contact our main office at Stanford-le-Hope.

In general, composite products containing less than 50 per cent of processed product of animal origin are not subject to veterinary checks, providing they meet the requirements of Article 6 of Commission Decision 2007/275/EC.

The processed product of animal origin in any composite products must come from an approved country and have undergone the minimum treatment required for that country.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has detailed guidance on the FSA website including a summary of the Article 6 requirements.
