Section 21 - Hairdressers and Barbers

Summary of licence

If you run a hairdressing or barbers business within the Square Mile you will need to register with the City of London Corporation. There is no requirement to register if your business solely involves the provision of hairdressing to people in their homes or in residential accommodation.

The regulation relating to this registration is the Greater London Council (General Powers) Act 1967, Section 21 can be found below.

​Any person carrying on a hairdressing or barber ​business must be registered for the specific premises. 

​Before applying for registration you must ensure that you have the necessary planning permission to carry on the business of a hairdresser or barber. A certificate of registration will not be issued where planning permission has not been granted. As well as registering a hairdressing business with the licensing team you will need to comply with health and safety requirements. The City of London environmental health team will be able to advise you on these requirements. Please visit the Health and Safety section for further information.
