St Andrew Undershaft Churchyard Enhancement
As part of the City of London Corporation's City Cluster Programme, enhancement works to St Andrew Undershaft Churchyard commenced on 07 July 2025. This project forms part of a wider initiative to improve public spaces across the City of London, supporting a greener, more inclusive and adaptable urban environment.
Project overview
The Churchyard is being re-landscaped to transform it into a more welcoming, accessible and usable green space in the heart of the City of London. The enhancements are designed to increase biodiversity, improve seating and resting opportunities, and make the space more vibrant and resilient for future generations.
Key improvements include:
- New soft landscaping to enhance greenery and biodiversity
- Improved and increased public seating
- A more open layout to enhance visibility and accessibility
- Introduction of climate resilience measures
- Sensitive integration of heritage features into the new design
These changes aim to better support the needs of workers, visitors and local communities, whilst respecting the site's historical significance.
Construction timeline and access
The works are expected to take approximately four months, with completion anticipated by late autumn 2025. Works will be delivered by the City Corporation's term contractor, FM Conway.
To ensure safety during construction, St Andrew Undershaft Churchyard will be closed to the public for the full duration of the works.
Next steps
We will continue to work closely with local stakeholders, businesses, and St Andrew Undershaft Church to minimise disruption and provide updates as the project progresses. A plan illustrating the improvements can be found below.
