Charterhouse Square school street

Date updated: 6/15/2021

The City of London Corporation, with the support of the London Borough of Islington, has introduced a “school street” on part of Charterhouse Square. Our aim is to reduce road danger and support children walking and cycling to and from Charterhouse Square School.

The experimental closure started on 26 April 2021.

We closed part of Charterhouse Square to motor vehicles during the start and finish times of the school day.

These times are:

Monday to Friday 8.15am-9.15am and 3pm-4pm (term time only)

Through traffic needs to divert to Long Lane.

Any vehicle, except emergency vehicles and refuse collecting vehicles, driven through Charterhouse Street during the restricted hours will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Access

During the scheme’s operational hours there is access to:

  • Carthusian Street and Charterhouse Street will be possible on either side of the closure
  • Hayne Street including the off-street parking/servicing areas will be maintained
  • Properties on either side of the closure will be maintained

Consultation, monitoring and enforcement

We introduced this scheme under an Experimental Traffic Order. Notices, on-street and in newspapers were published and signage was installed to let users know about the restrictions before the scheme launched.

We are monitoring the traffic flows on Charterhouse Square and the surrounding streets throughout the trial and to ensure compliance, the scheme is enforced using signage and cameras.

The trial will last at least 12 months and there will be an opportunity to comment on or object to the experiment during the first six months. An online survey will be available later in the year to gather your feedback on the scheme. If the experiment is deemed successful, we aim to make the changes permanent thereafter.
