Charterhouse Square school street
The City of London Corporation, with the support of the London Borough of Islington, is planning to introduce a “school street” on part of Charterhouse Square. Our aim is to reduce road danger and support children walking and cycling to and from Charterhouse Square School.
The experimental closure will start on 26 April 2021. We will ensure that at least seven days notice will be given before we introduce the restrictions.
We will close part of Charterhouse Square to motor vehicles during the start and finish times of the school day.
These times will be:
Monday to Friday 8.15am-9.15am and 3pm-4pm (term time only)
Through traffic will need to divert to Long Lane.
Any vehicle, except emergency vehicles and refuse collecting vehicles, that is driven through Charterhouse Street during the restricted hours will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
During the scheme’s operational hours there will be access to:
- Carthusian Street and Charterhouse Street will be possible on either side of the closure
- Hayne Street including the off-street parking/servicing areas will be maintained
- Properties on either side of the closure will be maintained
Consultation, monitoring and enforcement
We plan to introduce this scheme under an Experimental Traffic Order. Notices, on-street and in newspapers will be published and signage will be installed to let users know about the restrictions before the scheme is launched.
We will monitor the traffic flows on Charterhouse Square and the surrounding streets throughout the trial and to ensure compliance the scheme will be enforced using signage and cameras.
The trial will last at least 12 months and there will be an opportunity to comment on or object to the experiment during the first six months, and an online survey has been set up for this purpose. The survey will be available on this page one month after the scheme starts on 26 April 2021. If the experiment is deemed successful, we aim to make the changes permanent thereafter.
