Charterhouse Square school street

Date updated: 13/04/2023

The City of London Corporation, with the support of the London Borough of Islington, has introduced a “school street” on part of Charterhouse Square.  The school street will aim to reduce road danger and support children walking and cycling to and from Charterhouse Square School.

From 26 April 2021 we closed part of Charterhouse Square to motor vehicles during the start and finish times of the school day as part of a trial. It greatly reduced the number of motor vehicles driving outside the school and it received strong support from the parents and school staff.

The City Corporation has started the legal procedures to make the scheme permanent and it will continue to operate as normal.

These times are:

  • Monday to Friday 8.15am-9.15am and 3pm-4pm (term time only)

Through traffic needs to divert to Long Lane. The scheme is enforced by Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Any vehicle, except emergency vehicles and refuse collecting vehicles, driven through Charterhouse Street during the restricted hours will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Access

During the scheme’s operational hours access to:

  • Carthusian Street and Charterhouse Street will be possible on either side of the closure
  • Hayne Street including the off-street parking/servicing areas will be maintained
  • Properties on either side of the closure will be maintained
