Charterhouse Square school street

Date updated: 6/12/2024

The City of London Corporation, with the support of the London Borough of Islington, operates a “school street” on part of Charterhouse Square.

The school street reduces road danger and supports Charterhouse Square School pupils to walk, wheel and cycle.

The street is closed to motor-vehicles on weekdays between:

  • Monday to Friday 8.15am-9.15am and 3pm-4pm (term time only)

The school street was introduced as a trial in April 2021, which received strong support from the parents and school staff. The scheme was then made permanent.

Access

Through traffic needs to divert to Long Lane.

During the scheme’s operational hours access to:

  • Carthusian Street and Charterhouse Street will be possible on either side of the closure
  • Hayne Street including the off-street parking/servicing areas will be maintained
  • Properties on either side of the closure will be maintained

The scheme is enforced by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras. Any vehicle, except emergency vehicles and refuse collecting vehicles, driven through Charterhouse Street during the restricted hours may receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
