Inspired by keen plant collector Dr.John Fothergill who owned what is now West Ham Park in the 1760's , we are creating an 'Americas' garden using some plants that were first introduced here some 250 years ago, like the Evening Primrose. When Fothergill bought the Upton Estate, he had over 3,400 species in his collection.
Californian Poppy, a mix of shrubs and other herbaceous perennials have all been planted to create an interesting display of flowers and ground cover which will start to establish next summer. The focal point of the garden is this Giant sequoia tree (Sequoiadendron giganteum) the most massive tree in the world with the oldest known tree being 3,500 years old.
