Hire an expert

Sessions are run by an expert in the field and are suitable for general interest research through to students preparing for dissertations and postgraduate research. We currently have two established research workshops relating to family history and marine history, but are able to tailor make workshops on a range of subjects related to our collections.

How to book

Sessions are £20 for 50 minutes. To book your session email Guildhall Library with:

  • The name of the existing workshop or subject focus of research workshop
  • Your preferred date and time

If you prefer, you can call for an informal chat on 020 7332 1868.

Please note: while we will try to hold the session on your preferred date and time, they do book up quickly. We advise you try to book as early in advance as possible.

Research your family history

Learn how to get the most out of our family history sources and take your research a stage further. Family history sessions are normally taken by Peter Ross, our resident genealogical expert: Peter is a highly experienced family and local historian and has taught on our eight week family history course and our family history workshops.

Marine history

Research advice on the Merchant Navy materials held at Guildhall Library; offering three main areas of interest; ships’ details, shipping movements and casualties and shipping losses. The session can also be adapted to include resources for researching ‘people’ in the collection including Masters, Captains and First Mates. Our marine sessions are led by Jeanie Smith, keeper of the Lloyd’s Marine Collection an historic maritime collection held at Guildhall Library.
