Dickens' Magic Lantern

Date updated: 6/09/2022

In this two hour trail, discover the locations that inspired Dickens' novels, including where he imagined Oliver Twist watching the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates picking Mr Brownlow's pocket through to animals awaiting transfer from Cowcross Street (originally CowCrofts Street), as described in Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. You'll even see where 10-year-old Charles Dickens arrived from Kent in 1822.

There’s a number of places to visit. You can pick and choose elements of the walking tour as most of the sites of interest are grouped closely together.
