British Sign Language Level 1 Overview

The British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 course offers an introduction to the fundamental principles and vocabulary of BSL, providing participants with the skills and confidence to communicate effectively using sign language. Designed for beginners with no prior knowledge of BSL, this course aims to develop basic signing skills, promote deaf awareness, and foster an inclusive and accessible learning environment. Through a combination of practical exercises, interactive activities, and group discussions, participants will learn essential BSL signs, practice signing fluently, and gain an appreciation for deaf culture and communication.

Unit 101:

  • Topics: Meeting people, using numbers, weather, transport, and directions.
  • Assessment: Internally marked by the BSL tutor. This involves a recorded video clip of a basic conversation between the tutor and learner lasting up to 5 minutes.

Unit 102:

  • Topics: Describing people, animals, and objects; using numbers; interests and activities; food and drink.
  • Assessment: Externally marked by Signature. This involves a recorded video clip of a 4 to 5-minute conversation between the tutor and learner, based on a topic chosen by the learner.

Unit 103:

  • Topics: Getting around/directions, sharing information, weather, and using numbers.
  • Assessment: Externally marked by Signature. This involves a recorded video clip of a 4 to 5-minute conversation between the tutor and learner, based on a topic chosen by the learner.

Certification:

Upon successful completion of all assessments, learners will receive a British Sign Language Level One certificate from Signature, typically within 6 weeks.

British Sign Language Level 2 Overview

This Level 2 Certificate qualification in British Sign Language is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. Learners should be taught a number of regional variations in sign language. The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

Unit 201:

  • Theme: Everyday Conversation.
  • Assessment: Externally marked by Signature through a receptive video clip assessment. Learners will answer multiple-choice questions during this exam.

Unit 202:

  • Themes: Food & Drink, Travel & Holidays, Shopping & Spending.
  • Assessment: Externally marked by Signature. This involves a recorded video clip of a 4 to 5-minute conversation between the tutor and learner, based on a topic chosen by the tutor on the day.

Unit 203:

  • Themes: Food & Drink, Travel & Holidays, Shopping & Spending.
  • Assessment: Externally marked by Signature. This involves a recorded video clip of a 6 to 7-minute conversation between the tutor and learner, based on a topic chosen by the tutor on the day.

Certification:

Upon successful completion of all assessments, learners will receive a British Sign Language Level Two certificate from Signature, typically within 4 weeks. For more detailed information on the BSL Level 2 qualification and expectations, please refer to the attached qualification specification.

To be eligible for funding on our free courses you should be a UK national or an EEA national with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme and have been resident in the UK/EEA for the past three years. To be eligible for concessionary rates, you need to meet the aforementioned criteria and be 60 years of age or over, or be in receipt of Universal Credit Proof may be required, more information about this is on the enrolment form.
