About the estate
The City of London Almshouses estate is a small development of one-bedroom, self-contained dwellings on the ground and first floors, set within a conservation area. They offer homes for people aged 55 and over on a below average income or state benefits, who are in need of housing and require sheltered accommodation.
The Estate Office will be closed for one hour for lunch and is located on the ground floor of the square.
City of London Almshouses are situated just off Brixton Hill/Brixton Road in Brixton, with an assortment of shops nearby. The nearest post office is five minutes’ walk away at 250 Ferndale Road, Brixton, London SW9 8BQ. Most of the high street banks are found on Brixton Hill/Brixton Road as are a selection of supermarkets.
There is a communal hall at the Almshouses, where residents can enjoy social activities. There is also a large lawned area and landscaped gardens for residents to use.
Almshouses are situated in Ferndale Road, Brixton, and are conveniently close to a large shopping area, public transport and local amenities. There are many other amenities, leisure facilities and places of worship locally. The Almshouses Manager would be happy to help source other/alternative places of worship/religious groups or any other facilities within the locality or wider community.
The City of London Almshouses Trust is a charity registered with the Charity Commission and a housing association registered with the Housing Corporation. The Trust is administered by a body of Trustees who give their services voluntarily. The Almshouses are managed on behalf of the Trustees by the City of London.
There is a resident Almshouses Manager who is on duty Monday to Friday. Outside working hours, all properties on the estate are linked to a pull-cord alarm system which is monitored by Southwark Monitoring and Response Team (SMART).

In order to apply, potential applicants must be aged 55 or over and fulfil at least one of the following criteria:
- Have been living in the London Borough of Lambeth or have worked in the City of London for a period of five years or the 12 months prior to your application
- Have a child or sibling living in the City of London or in the London Borough of Lambeth
