Waste strategy and future plans

Date updated: 11/01/2023

The City of London Corporation has a strong track record in sustainable waste management, being the first London Authority to sort and recycle waste from our streets and now no waste is sent direct to landfill. The City Corporation runs an awards scheme for business of all sizes, the Clean City Awards, which promotes and rewards best practice in sustainable waste management and has been running for over 25 years.

Waste Strategy 2013-2020

The City of London Waste Strategy 2013-2020 contains the framework necessary to build on these successes and continue to provide excellent levels of service to our residents and visitors. It  highlights how we use our influence and expertise to encourage businesses within the Square Mile to take the right decisions to responsibly manage their waste.

New strategy

The City Corporation is developing a new strategy which will focus on waste and the circular economy. We aim to publish the new strategy in 2022.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

An SEA Determination Report of the Strategy, carried out in accordance with the Environmental Assessment of Programmes and Plans Regulations 2004, found that no significant environmental effects resulted from the strategy and there was no requirement for a full Strategic Environmental Assessment.

Reduction and recycling plan

Under the Mayor of London’s Environment Strategy (LES) all London Boroughs are required to develop a Reduction and Recycling Plan (RRP) covering the period 2018 to 2022 which sets out each London borough will work towards the objectives of the LES. To view the City of London’s RRP, please visit the City of London's page on the London datastore.
