London Metropolitan Archives Saturday Matinee Film Series

LMA have launched a Saturday Matinee Film Series on our YouTube Channel. The films are published on the first Saturday of every month and are from LMA’s Film Collection. Many of these films have been digitised in High Definition quality and one has been digitised in glorious 4K definition.

The September film was 'River Cruise' featuring a riverboat journey along the River Thames looking at some of London's most iconic landmarks, including Hampton Court Palace, Marble Hill House, Kenwood House, The Royal Festival Hall and the Thames Barrier.

The August Saturday Matinee showing was a ‘Seeing London’ triple bill digitised from the same 16mm film reel. These silent Kodak films provide a fascinating glimpse of life in London in the 1920’s.

The July film in the series was the silent ‘Bermondsey Wall’ (1932) which explores the work of the Time and Talents Association for young people in the London district of Bermondsey. The film depicts many London landmarks including Tower Bridge, The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping Old Stairs, The Town of Ramsgate, Cherry Garden Pier, Nightingale Lane, Oliver House and Bermondsey Wall.

The June Saturday Matinee screening was a London double feature depicting the Capital from a bygone age digitised in HD.

The May film in the series was ‘Victory Day’ (1946), which depicts the London Victory Celebrations on 8 June 1946, commemorating the British and Allied victory in the Second World War, digitised in HD.

The April film, the first in the series, was ‘City of London’ (1951), made for the Festival of Britain and exploring the many different customs and landmarks within the City of London in a single day. This was our first film to be digitised in 4K.
