Barbican Estate Listed Building Management Guidelines

The Barbican Estate is a mixed-use development built between 1963 and 1982 by the City of London Corporation, designed by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. It includes the Barbican Centre, City of London School for Girls, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, St Giles Cripplegate Church and more than 2,000 flats.

In 2001, it was designated Grade II for its special architectural and historic interest.

It is in the Barbican and Golden Lane Conservation Area (designated 2018), is Grade II* on the Historic England Register of Historic Parks and Gardens (designated 2003) and the Roman and medieval City Wall Scheduled Monuments have statutory protection. It is a Grade II Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation identified in the Mayor’s London Plan and the City of London Biodiversity Action Plan.

Guidelines

The Barbican Listed Building Management Guidelines Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) assist in managing changes to the estate which may affect its special interest and help residents, those managing the estate and planning officers to assess what work will need listed building consent.
