More space for walking
The City of London Corporation is providing more space for people and improving their comfort and safety through the Pedestrian Priority Streets programme.
In summer 2020, as part of our COVID-19 response to give more space and priority to people, we restricted through traffic on Chancery Lane between 7am-7pm, Monday- Friday. The restrictions were lifted in autumn 2021.
New experimental scheme
A new experimental scheme started on 20 February 2023. This restricts through traffic on Chancery Lane between 7am-7pm, Monday-Friday but allow taxis and vehicle access to properties and parking and loading bays.
The experiment runs for a maximum of 18 months and we will monitor the effects on Chancery Lane and surrounding streets and gather feedback from residents, businesses and other street users during this period. This monitoring and feedback will inform the decision on whether to make the scheme permanent.
Project objectives
- Making Chancery Lane a more attractive place for people to walk and spend time
- Identify future public realm upgrades
- Minimise adverse impact on neighbouring streets
