Knighton Wood and Lords Bushes

Situated between Woodford Green and Buckhurst Hill, Knighton Wood and Lords Bushes is an area of Forest land very popular with local visitors.

Much of this area is a relic from the formal gardens of the Buxton Estate, so like Wanstead Park, there are still lots of recognisable landscaped features to spot on your visit.

There are still some 300 veteran trees to see on your way round, including pollarded oaks and hornbeams, as well as ash, crab apple, elm, field maple, hawthorn, sycamore and yew.

Things to do in Knighton Wood and Lords Bushes

  • Take your dog for a walk
  • Visitors with access difficulties can explore our easy access trail
  • Head out for a day of fishing at Knighton Lake - see our fishing page for details
  • Grab your binoculars and visit for some bird-watching, or see how many dragonflies and amphibians you can spot!

Easy access trail

Our easy access trail at Knighton Wood winds around the lake and between the plants and trees of the old formal garden, once part of the Buxton Estate.

  • This trail has a level, firm, non-slip surface and is 0.65km (0.4 miles) long with benches and passing places for wheelchairs at regular intervals
    • The path has some inclines; but a shorter, level circuit of the path can be taken instead if preferable
  • Interpretation is available at the beginning of the trail and is large print and accessible and readable from a seated position
  • The path can be most easily accessed from Knighton Wood car park via a firm and level path
  • Unfortunately, we do not have toilet or refreshment facilities nearby, but these can be found in nearby Buckhurst Hill before or after your visit
