Mixed recycling

Clear recycling sacks are provided for mixed recycling. Tie up the recycling sack and put it in your refuse cupboard for ​the daily collection Monday to Friday before 8am.

Recycling bins are located within the car park areas. The bins will normally have a green lid and the Household Recycling icon. Download the Barbican Estate recycling map (below) for location.

Items that you can not put in your clear recycling bag​

  • crisp packets
  • coffee cups
  • polystyrene
  • pizza boxes
  • nappies
  • black bags
  • textiles
  • ceramic

More items you can recycle

Food waste

Barbican residents are provided with a kitchen caddy and compostable liners to contain food waste. All types of food can be included in your food waste collection, cooked and uncooked, egg shells, bones, tea bags and coffee grounds.

Put your caddy containing the tied liner inside your refuse cupboard. It will be collected daily Monday to Friday at the same time as your refuse and recycling sacks. Food waste bins are also located within car park areas. Download the Barbican Estate recycling map (below) for location. The bins are green and have the Food Waste Recycling icon on them.​​

Small electrical and electronic items

These can be recycled in the pink Small Electrical Items bins in the bin areas in Bunyan Court car park, Thomas More House car park and Willoughby House car park. Download the Barbican Estate recycling map (below) for location.

Small appliances include:

  • irons
  • microwaves
  • hair dryers
  • kettles
  • electric shavers
  • toasters
  • electric toothbrushes
  • mobile phones
  • table lamps
  • DVD and CD players
  • Walkmans, Discmans, radios
  • laptop or desktop computers, games consoles

Large appliances

Large electrical appliances are collected through the Bulky Waste collection service and sent for reuse or recycling.

Please call 020 7606 3110 to arrange a collection or take items to bulky waste collection points. Download the Barbican Estate recycling map (below) for location. There may be a charge for this service.

Large electrical items include:

  • televisions
  • computer monitors
  • fridges/freezers
  • dish washers
  • ​washing machines
  • tumble dryers
  • electric cookers
  • electric ovens

Note: Televisions, monitors and fridges/freezers are classed as hazardous waste and must not be put in the recycling bin.

Textiles, clothes and shoes

You can place textiles, clothes and shoes in the Salvation Army collection bank at the top of Willoughby car park ramp, in Bunyan Court car park or in Thomas More car park. Please tie shoes together.

Low energy light bulbs and batteries

You can recycle your low energy light bulbs and batteries in the bins at the following locations. Download the Barbican Estate recycling map (below) for location:

  • Willoughby underground car park
  • Bunyan Court car park
  • Andrews House car park
  • Breton House car park
  • Thomas More House car park
  • Beech Street lay-bay (just batteries)
  • Barbican Estate Office, 3 Lauderdale Place

Alternatively you can take your batteries and light bulbs to your local supermarket or Robert Dyas store.
